What are common findings in babies born to mothers with diabetes?
Macrosomia
Small Left colon syndrome

What is Macrosomia?
all organs are enlarged except for the brain: increased output from bone marrow leads to poycythemia and hyperviscoscity
What are possible clues in the hx for macrosomia?
Shoulder dystocia and brachial plexus palsy
What is small left colon syndrome?
Congenitally smaller descending colon leading to distension from constipiation
How do you diagnose small left colon syndrome?
Barium study
How do you treat small left colon syndrome?
Smaller, more frequent feeds
What is the major cardiac change in infants born to mothers with Diabetes?
Asymmetric septal hypertrophy due to obliteration of the LV chamber
What does Asymmetric Septal Hypertrophy in a new born lead to?
Decreased Cardiac Output
How do you diagnose Asymmetric Septal Hypertrophy in an infant?
Echocardiography
How do you treat Asymmetric Septal Hypertrophy in an infant?
Beta Blockers and IV Fluids
How does Renal Vein Thrombosis Present?
Flank mass with possible Bruit
Hematuria and thrombocytopenia
What can Hypoglycemia in newborn cause?
Seizures
What can Hypocalcemia in a newborn cause?
Tetany
What can Hypomagnesemia in a newborn cause?
Hypocalcemia and PTH decrease
What can Hyperbilirubinemia in a newborn cause?
Icterus and Kernicterus
