What are endometrial polyps?

A

Localized outgrowths from the surface of endometrium

Aetiology of polyps?

A
  • Can occur at any age, usually around or after menopause
  • Benign(endometrial carcinoma can present as polyp though)
  • Implicated in sub-fertility

Presentation of endometrial polyps?

A
  • Usually asymptomatic
  • Can contribute to abnormal uterine bleeding or discharge
  • Pain sometimes if uterus tries to expel polyp

A
  • Transvaginal US

- Can do hysteroscopy with biopsy

Treatment of asymptomatic polyps?

A

May resolve spontaneously and watchful waiting = treatment

A

Can be removed surgically, using modern equipment and can often be done without Generak anaesthetic
