Energy Flashcards
(22 cards)
Pros of solar energy?
. It is renewable
. No pollution
What is solar energy used for
Turns into electrical energy by solar cells and is used to heat water for homes using solar cells
Cons of solar energy?
Expensive
Only works when sunny
How does wind energy work?
The rota spins round and collects kinetic energy, this turns into electrical energy
How does biomass energy work?
Burns things that were once alive eg. Trees, trees absorb the suns energy and change it to chemical energy, we burn the wood and make heat which we use for cooking and heating
How does geothermal energy work?
Comes from heat underground, cold water is pumped underground, hot rocks heat the water and turn it into steam, the steam is used to generate electricity
How does hydroelectrical energy work
It comes from flowing water, the water has kinetic energy, then we build a dam, the water then flows through gradually
How does tidal energy work?
When he tide is high the water is trapped behind a dam, at low tide the water is released to generate electricity
What is wave energy?
It uses machines that bob up and down in the waves, the energy can then be turned into electrical energy
What is oil energy?
The oil is heated
Why is the sun the ultimate source of energy?
Without the sun we would not have many forms of energy. The sun gives plants earthy through photosynthesis, heats the air to cause wind, makes waves on the sea, evaporates water to cause rain. Also, trees store energy from the sun, dead trees fall into swamps, trees are buried under mud, the wood gradually turns into coal. Plants and animals in the sea rely on sun, turn into gas and coal
What is conservation of energy? How is it dissipated?
When energy is transferred no energy is lost or created. The amount remains the same. However it is changed into several different forms and may be too small to be noticed
What is the greenhouse effect?
Gases in the air such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxides and Cfc’s trap the radiation from the sun that is reflected back from the earth.
Power station?
Coal is burned in a furnace, this heats up water in a boiler making steam, waste gases from the furnace escape through a chimney stack to the sky, the steam is piped to a steam turbine, as the turbine spins it turns a generator, electricity is produced by the generator leaves the power station on power lines, unused steam is condensed back into water and returned to the boiler.
What are the pros and cons of biomass?
.renewable if we keep planting trees,
doesn’t need special equipment,
doesn’t add to the greenhouse effect
.large areas are needed to grow trees
What are the pros and cons of geothermal energy?
.renewable,
no pollution,
it doesn’t damage the environment
.very few places in the world can do this,
it costs a lot of money
What are the pros and cons of hydroelectric energy?
.it is renewable,
no pollution,
we can store the water and let it out when we need energy.
.it costs lots of money,
it can ruin the environment-it changes the way water naturally flows.
What are the pros and cons of wind energy?
.renewable,
no pollution,
easy and cheap to build
.ugly and noisy,
only works when windy
What are the pros and cons of tidal energy?
.it is renewable,
no pollution,
reliable as there are two tides every day,
cheap to run
.costs a lot to build,
it may cause local flooding
What are the pros and cons of wave energy?
.renewable,
no pollution
.needs a lot of machines,
machines cost a lot of money,
the machines can look ugly,
the machines can be damaged by storms
What are the pros and cons of oil energy?
.we can get hold of it easily,
cheap to do,
we have always done it,
.non renewable,
nearly run out,
it may cause wars, over oil
Why do we need to move away from fossil fuels?
They give out carbon dioxide which adds to the greenhouse effect. As well as all the other cons.
