Q

Why are some materials magnetic and some not?

A

Magnetic materials contain atoms that behave like tiny magnets, in non material materials the atoms do not. Magnetic materials contain magnetic fields.

Q

How can a material be magnetised?

A

The domains are lined up by stroking the material with a magnetic repeatedly in the same direction with the North Pole.

Or

Heating it and then tapping in the same direction.

Q

How can a magnet be demagnetised?

A

By dropping it repeatedly or by heating to a high temperature, the atoms then become jumbled up in different directions

6
Q

Which magnetic materials are easy to magnetise and demagnetise? Which are difficult?

A

“Soft” materials such as iron are easy to magnetise and demagnetise. “Hard” materials such as steel are hard to magnetise and demagnetise.

Q

Where does the earth’s magnetic field originate from?

A

From the movement of iron in the earths core, the pattern of the earths magnetic field behaves as if there is a huge bar magnet in the earth.

15
Q

Do the earths magnetic poles always stay the same?

A

No they gradually, over time, reverse.

16
Q

Does the earth have magnetic fields?

A

Yes, similar to that of a bar magnet. North to South.
