➽ ENERGY - Energy adds up Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is the law of conservation of energy?
No energy can be created or destroyed, only transferred. The total amount of energy stays the same before and after a change/process.
What are the 5 energy stores?
- Chemical
- Thermal
- Kinetic
- Gravitational potential
- Elastic
What is the chemical store related to?
Food, fuels and batteries
What is the thermal store related to?
Hot objects/Heat
What is the kinetic store related to?
Moving objects
What is the gravitational potential store related to?
Height of an object
What is the elastic store related to?
Stretched or squashed objects
What are the 3 ways we can observer energy transfer?
- Electric current
- Light
- Sound
What is dissipated energy?
Energy that is wasted; it is transferred to an unwanted store. E.g. a car engine heating up as energy is transferred to the thermal store of the car.
What allows things to occur?
Forces, NOT energy. Energy reveals what processes are possible but doesn’t cause them:
e.g. energy from fuels can allow a car to drive but its the force from the engine that actually moves the car.
