Joules (J) or Kilojoules (kJ)
How many Joules are there in one Kilojoule?

How does the amount of energy in different foods compare?
Different foods contain different amounts of energy.
If the body requires energy to function, can we just eat any foods?
No, both the nutritional value as well as energy content of food should be taken into account.
What are fuels?
Things that release energy when burned.
Give me 3 examples of fuels.
- Coal
- Oil
- Wood
How are fuels and food similar?
- They both store energy
- Fuels release energy when burned, and foods release energy when digested.
Approximately how much energy does sleep require per hour?
300 kJ/hour
Approximately how much energy does working require per hour?
600 kJ/hour
Approximately how much energy does playing require per hour?
3600 kJ/hour
Which types of activities require more energy and why?
Physical activities require more energy than regular tasks as the body has far more processes to carry out, e.g. more breathing, sweating, etc.
What types of people require more energy?
- Athletes - they do a lot of physical activity
- Growing children - lots of energy is used up for bone and muscle growth.
What happens to extra energy in the body?
It is converted into fat.
