Energy Systems Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is glycolysis
Turning glucose into pyruvic acid
What fuel is ised in the aerobic and lactic acid system
Glucose/ glycogen
Where does aerobic glycolysis take place
The Sarcoplasm
Where does the Krebs cycle and Electron Transport Chain take place
In the mitochondria
How long does the aerobic system work for
3 minutes +
How long does the lactic acid system work for
10 seconds- 2 minutes
How long does the ATP- PC system work for
2-10 seconds
What are 3 advantages and disadvantages of the ATP/PC system
Advantages:
- Readily available PC stores
- provides energy for high intensity exercise
- No harmful bi- products produced
Disadvantages:
- PC stores in muscles are limited
Only provides energy for 10 seconds
- Low ATP yield 1PC: 1ATP
What are 2 advantages and disadvantages of the lactic acid system
Advantages:
1) Provides energy for high intensity exercise
2) Higher ATP yield than ATP/PC system
Disadvantages:
1) Creates a bi product ( lactic acid)
2) Low ATP yield compared to the aerobic system
What are 2 advantages and disadvantages of the aerobic system
Advantages:
1) High ATP yield
2) No bi products produced
Disadvantages:
1) cant perform high intensity exercises
2) Slow energy resynthesis
