Energy transfers Flashcards
(13 cards)
What are the 8 different energy stores?
Chemical
Kinetic
Gravitational
Elastic
Thermal
Magnetic
Electrostatic
Nuclear
What are the 4 ways energy can be transferred?
Heating (by)
Electrically
Radiation (by)
Mechanically
What is an example of something being transferred mechanically?
When gravity accelerates an object and give sit kinetic energy
What is an example of something being transferred electrically?
When a current passes through a lamp and it emits light and heat
What is an example of something being transferred by heating?
When a fire is used to heat up an object
What is an example of something being transferred by radiation?
When vibrations cause waves to travel through the air as sound, or and object emits electromagnetic radiation
What is the law of energy?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be transferred and stored
What is the principle of conservation energy?
Energy is always conserved, the total energy before is equal to the total energy after
How is heat transferred in solids?
Conduction
How does conduction take place?
Vibrating particles transfer energy to neighboring particles
What happens when a metal is heated?
It causes particles to vibrate faster, therefore colliding with neighboring particles more, leading to the transfer of energy from hotter parts to cooler parts
Do metals have high thermal conductivity?
Yes and they transfer heat energy rapidly
