Force Flashcards
(28 cards)
How do you calculate force?
Mass x Acceleration
or
F=MxA
What is force measured in?
Newtons or N
What is mass measured in?
Kilograms or Kg
What can force cause an object to do?
-Speed up
-Slow down
-Change direction
-Change shape
What are some example of forces?
-Gravitational (weight)
-Normal reaction/contact
-Friction
-Air resistance/drag
-Upthrust
-Magnetic
-Electrostatic
What is gravitational force?
This is the attractive force exerted between bodies because of masses
How does gravitational force increase?
If the one or both of the masses is increased
How does gravitational force decrease?
If they are moved further apart
What is the gravitational force of the earth?
Weight
What is normal reaction/contact force?
A force that acts on an object when it touches a surface
Why is normal reaction force/contact force described as “normal”?
The word normal means that the force acts at 90 degrees to the surface of the bodies
What is friction?
The force that opposes motion by slowing things down
How does friction slow things down?
The kinetic energy if the moving object is converted to heat energy by the force of friction
What is friction needed for?
Friction is needed for racing cars to grip to the road and for walking
What is air resistance/drag?
This is the force that opposes movement of objects through fluids
What is the difference between drag and air resistance?
Drag is amore general term used for the opposition of force in any gas or liquid
What is Upthrust?
This is the force experienced by objects when they are placed in a fluid
When do objects float on an object?
When the upthrust equals its weight
When does a hot air balloon rise?
When its weight is greater than upthrust from the surrounding air
What is magnetic force?
A force that acts between two magnetic objects
What is electrostatic force?
Attractive repulsive forces due to bodies being charged
What is Newton’s first law of motion?
An object will remain in a state of rest or carry on moving at constant velocity if the forces acting on it are balanced
When are forces balanced?
When Fr/resultant force equals 0
