Energy Use, Diet, Nutrition, And Hydration Flashcards
What is the main source of energy for high-intensity exercise?
Carbohydrates
What is the main source of energy for low-intensity exercise?
Fats
What is dehydration?
The loss of water and salts essential for normal body function.
What is metabolic rate?
The rate at which metabolic processes take place; the rate at which a body uses up energy.
What is hydration?
Being hydrated means the body has the correct amount of water in cells, tissues and organs to function correctly. The average recommended daily intake is 2.5 litres of water for men and 2 litres of water for women.
What is a diuretic?
Something that makes you produce more urine.
What are the 7 elements of a balanced diet?
- Carbohydrates
- Proteins
- Vitamins
- Fats
- Minerals
- Fibre
- Water
Give some examples and purposes of minerals
- Calcium - strength of bones and teeth
- Iron - linked with haemoglobin, oxygen carrying part of blood.
- Sodium - maintaining a stable blood pressure
- Potassium - balancing of fluids and heart function
- Zinc - promoting healing and cell growth
Describe two possible benefits of drinking water during a triathalon
- Replenishes stores of water lost through sweating - rigorous physical activity causes the athlete to sweat, reducing the amount of water in the body. If there isn’t enough water to sweat, the body may overheat. Drinking water during this can prevent it.
- Increased blood flow to the working muscles, so more oxygen transported to working muscles so that they can work aerobically for longer.
What percentage of your total diet should be made up of fats?
30%
What are the benefits of having a balanced supply of vitamins?
- Good vision
- Good skin
- Red blood cell formation
- Healing
- Healthy bones and teeth
- Blood clotting
