Enzymes Flashcards

1
Q

How do enzymes catalyse reactions

A

Work by decreasing the activation energy of spontaneous reactions
They are substrate specific and are not used up in the reaction
Bin to the active site of the substrate then change configuration, help produce the product but aren’t involved

Q

Explain Kmax and Vmax

A

Kmax is the affinity a substrate and enzyme have
Vmax is how fast a reaction is proceeding when substrate is fully saturated with enzyme

Q

Explain competitive and non- competitive inhibitors

A

Competitive- Vmax unchanged, Kmax increased to overcome inhibition
Non- competitive- Vmax decreased, Kmax unchanged
