Enzymes Flashcards
(9 cards)
What are enzymes?
Globular proteins that act as catalysts
What are catalysts
They alter the rate of chemical reaction without undergoing permanent change themselves
What is activation energy
The minimum amount of energy required to activate a reaction
What are a number of conditions that must be satisfied in order for a typical chemical reaction to take place?
The molecules of each reactant must collide with sufficient energy to alter the arrangement of their atoms to form a product
Free energy of the products must be less than that of the substrates
Requires activation energy
Why is the sequence of amino acids important to enzymes?
They give the globular protein a specific shape
What is the active site of the enzyme?
The specific region of an enzyme that is functional
What is the molecule that acts on the enzyme called?
The substrate
How is the substrate held within the active site?
By bonds that temporarily form between certain amino acids of active site and the groups on the substrate molecule
What is the induced fit model?
The active site forms as the enzyme and substrate interact - in other word, the enzyme is flexible and the moulds itself around the substrate
