Enzymes Flashcards
(7 cards)
Enzymes
These are biological catalysts which speed up the rate of reaction
Properties of enzymes
They are proteins
They have the tertiary protein structure
Have specific shaped active site to which specific molecules bind to (substrates)
The active site must have a complementary shape to it’s substrate in the lock and key theory
Substrate
The substance on which an enzyme act to form the products
Active site
The part of the enzyme where the substrate binds
Factors affecting the binding pf substrate to enzyme
The shape of the active site
Bond formation between parts of the substrates and the amino acids R groups in the active site
Collision theory
All molecules must collide with sufficient force called activation energy to start the reaction
Enzyme substrate complex
Enzymes collides with substrate molecules binding to the active site an enzyme substrate complex is formed. Substrate is then broken down to release products freeing the enzyme to collide with the next substrate
