Enzymes & Digestion Flashcards
What are simple sugars?
Carbohydrates that are only made up of one or two units of sugar e.g. Glucose
What are complex carbohydrates?
Things such as starch are made up of many small sugar until joined together in a long chain
What are lipids made of?
Built from fatty acids and glycerol
What are proteins made up of?
Long chains of amino acids
Give three uses of protein
- Antibodies
- Hormones
- Enzymes
What is an enzyme?
A catalyst produced by living things
What is a catalyst?
A catalyst is a substance that speeds up a reaction, without being changed or used up
What is a substrate?
A molecule that is changed in a reaction
What is the active site?
The part where a substrate joins on to the enzyme
What happens to the enzyme if the temperature gets too high?
The enzyme becomes denatured
What happens to the enzyme if the pH is too high?
The enzyme becomes denatured
What do digestive enzymes do?
Break down big, insoluble molecules into smaller, soluble ones. So that they can pass through the walls of the stomach and be absorbed into the bloodstream
Which enzyme converts starch into sugars?
Amylase
Where is amylase produced?
- Salivary glands
- Pancreas
- Small intestine
Where does amylase work?
Mouth and small intestine
