Erikson Stages of Development Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is the first stage of Erikson’s Stages of Psychosocial Development?
Trust vs Mistrust (Hope) (Infancy - 2 Years)
If needs are dependably met, infants develop a sense of basic trust.
We learn that if we can trust someone now we can also trust others in the future. The Key to this development stage is our mother.
What is the second stage of Erikson’s Stages of Psychosocial Development?
Autonomy vs Shame/Doubt (Will) Early Childhood (2-3 Years)
Toddlers learn to exercise will and do things for themselves, or they doubt their abilities.
Both parents play a role in this development stage.
What is third stage of Erikson’s Stages of Psychosocial Development?
Initiative vs Guilt - Preschool Age (3 - 5 Years)
Preschoolers learn to initiate tasks and carry out plans, or they feel guilty about efforts to be independent.
What is fourth stage of Erikson’s Stages of Psychosocial Development?
Industry vs Inferiority (Competency) - School Age (5-12 Years)
Age: 5 - 13 years
Children learn the pleasure of applying themselves to tasks, or they feel inferior.
We discover our own interest and realize that we are different from others. If we receive recognition from our teachers and peers we become industrious (hard working). If we receive negative feedback we become inferior.
What is the psychosocial crisis/task at stage 5?
Identity vs. Role Confusion - Adolescence (13-19 years)
Teenagers work at refining a sense of self by testing roles and then integrating them to form a single identity, or they become confused about who they are.
What is the psychosocial crisis/task at stage 6?
Intimacy vs Isolation - Early Adulthood (20-40 years)
Young adults struggle to form close relationships and to gain the capacity for intimate love, or they feel socially isolated.
What is the psychosocial crisis/task at stage 7?
Generativity vs Stagnation - Adulthood (40-65 Years)
The middle-aged discover a sense of contributing to the world, usually through family and work, or they may feel a lack of purpose.
What is the psychosocial crisis/task at stage 8?
Integrity vs Despair - Maturity (65-Death)
When reflecting on his or her life, the older adult may feel a sense of satisfaction or failure.
