Ethnicity Essay Flashcards
(9 cards)
P1- Department of Education and Archer and Francis
Dep of eduation statistics; 75% of chinese and 73% of indian students were highest achievers at GCSE level, with black carrib students having lowest attainment of 47%. Archer and Francis explain the high performances of chinese students by showing both parents and children place strong emphasis on ed and uni, viewing it as a means of overcoming social disadvantages.
P2- Cecile Right and Swan Report
Cecile right found that black carrib boys often received neg attention from students, contributing to neg labelling and lower achievement in education. Swan report also found racism in schools, inc teacher stereotypes and insittutional racism, harming the ed experiences for some ethnic minortiy students.
P3- Exclusion rates and gillborn and Youdel
Exclusion rates further reflect this inequal with black carribean students accounting for 8% of exclusion rates. Gillborn and Youdel attribute this to ‘racial expectatitons’ - teachers holding higher expectations for chinese and lower expectations for black carribean, leading to a self-fulfilling prophecy
P4- Gypsey and Johnson
gypsy traveller students also face ed disadvantages, making up 8% of the lowest-performing groups. Johnson;s theory of the ethnocentric curriculm can offer an explanation for this- suggests curriculm centres White British culture, excluding other cultures including gypsy travellers. As a result, the curriculm feels irrelevant or alientating for some ethnic minority students.
P5- Conclusion
Overall, these sources highlight clear evidence of ethnic inequality in educational outcmes, attainment and the treatment of students.
P6- Black over rep and David Wellman
Black carribean groups over-rep at every stage of CJS. David Wellman’s research suggests that racism is conerned with protecting the privledged status of white people, contributing to over-rep of black ethnic groups in official crime stats
P7- Black prison pop, Macpherson report and Holdway
Black ethnic groups make up 13% of prison pop but just 3% of wider population. Macpherson report identifies institutional racism in Metropolitan police. Holdway’s concept of canteen culture further supports how the informed norms of police officers reinforce ethnic inequal in CJS
P8- Stop and search stats and Robert Miles
This inequal is further supported by stop and search stats which reveal black ethnic groups are 18x more likely to be stopped and on average 6x more likely than white people. Robert miles links this to institutional racism, w discrimination embedded structurally, even without consciosu intent, as a result of anti-black attitudes.
P9- Asian groups and Cicourel
Asian groups significantly under-rep in prison, making up just 3% of population with chinese groups accounting for just 4% of that figure. Cicourel’s concept of typifications would explain this as a result of police stereotyping, cjs associated crimianlity with black ethnic groups, contributing to a disproportionate number of arrests and reinforcing ethnic inequality in the CJS.
