13
Q

what ways was the gold aureus of 43bc unsuccessful

A

would have only really worked on the plebians who had no political standing and a deeper alliance to JC than senatorial classes who disliked his tyranny more
BUT it is a gold aureus, distributed towards the upper classes, still links him to JC who recently was assass

A

by giving MA’s daughter to octavian in marriage and taking an oath, cementing julius’ will.

17
Q

why was temple of mars ultor built

A

to commemorate aug victory at 42BC battle of philippi. became place where important military decisions were made and state ceremonies of military connotation

18
Q

describe temple of mars ultor

A

8000 square meters and built next to JC forum
imitated julius’ temple to venus in architecture
made from white marble
dedicated to mars the avenger and served as a justification for philippi for octavian as it relates to roman values of pietas.

19
Q

effect of apollo being incorporated as a patron saint on aug’s image

A

assoc octavian with success, healing, prophecy, and knowledge. use of co-marketing allows pre-conceptions of apollo to be transferred to augustus

20
Q

effect did dressing apollo at his wedding on aug image

A

38bc
suggested the union of livia and apollo was blessed by the gods.
sense of security to romans due to the belied that portrayals of the gods could actually become them.

21
Q

effect of connecting apollo’s temple to his own house on aug image and what year

A

28BC welcomes aug to the pantheon and put shim on the same level of esteem and power as apollo

22
Q

effect of emulating hercules’ appearance on antony’s image

A

suggested mainly tot he east that he was a strong soldier
co-marketing connects hercules’ reputation with his own

23
Q

what effect did forming a dionysian cult have on antony’s image good and bad

A

suggested he was passionate and isnpired, he embodies the spirit of dionysus - since D was an oracular and inspiring force. co-marketing

bad - octavian could now set antony up as a traitor to rome, as a man who betrayed the civilised ways of roman life for a wild life of hubris. manipulated dionysian image to portray antony as a madman, incompetent to handle power

24
Q

why was antony’s use of dionysian image weaker grab than octavian’s apollonian iamge

A

dionysus was only a demigod, octavian had two gods on his side, apollo (patron saint), Venus (ancestral lineage)

25
why was MA'S assoc with cleopatra a political misstep
while she had the power and soldiers he needed, her eastern heritage allowed octavian to use the culture of decadence and magic to turn her into a wicked temptress, a witch who had seduced antony to mutiny against the mos maiorum
26
why was MA relationship w cleopatra unpopular and illegal
the bigamy and infidelity he committed against octavia turned many romans against him, gave octavian an access point to undermine MA
27
describe parade that anyony conducted as part of the donations of alexandria
dressed as dionysus, placed two thrones of gold (MA, Cleo) on a tribunal of silver, declaring cleo the "queen of kings" gives her and caesarion egypt, cyprus, libya and syria. leaves Alexander and Ptolomy Armenia, Media, and Parthia. declared his sons "kings of kings"
28
how did MA use caesarion
following the smear campaign by octavian, MA began to emphasise caesarion was the most true heir of Caesar. octavian commissioned a pamphlet proving that caesarion was not caesar's.
29
how is the denarius of aug and pax used as propaganda
this coin, used to pay the troops who fought at actium, used co-marketing with Pax to insinuate that the war was for peace/to protect peace. it is a justification as it suggests that the war will bring prosperity to rome (cornucopia)
30
how effective is the octavian denarius with pax 32BC
while the coin reached most of the empire, the troops and upper class people would have seen the hypocrisy in paying for a war with a coin of peace. plus they would have known the war was political rather than necessary.
