Exam 2 - Sterile preparations (devices) Flashcards
(12 cards)
What are the classes of parenteral product containers?
class I, II, III
class I is the safest
Describe vials as a parenteral product container
glass or plastic
flip off caps or metal covers protect the rubber stopper BUT does not have guaranteed sterility (should use alcohol wipe to ensure sterility)
List the parenteral product containers
vials
ampuls (ampules, ampoules)
IV bags
Describe ampuls as a parenteral product container
- made of glass
- single use containers
- provide hermetic (& sterile) containment → no chance for pathogens to enter (no preservatives)
Describe IV bags as a parenteral product container
piggyback containers containing the medication
needs to be ABOVE the LVC (large volume container) for the IV to work
Describe the parts of a syringe
- luer lok: required for hazardous drugs (twist it to lock, most secure connection)
- luer tip
- calibration marks
- barrel
- plunger piston
- plunger
What part of the syringe should be used to read the final volume?
use the final edge of the plunger piston to read the volume (accuracy ~½ of smallest division)
Explain how needles are categorized (via size)
via gauge & length number
Define “gauge” as it relates to needle size
number corresponding to the bore diameter
(range: 13-27)
Define “length” as it relates to needle size
length of the needle shaft
(range: ⅜” - 3.5”)
What does a lower gauge number indicate?
thicker diameter needle
What does a higher gauge number indicate?
thinner diameter needle
