Exam 3: Lecture 9 Flashcards
Repetitive vs Traumatic injuries
throwing, shin splints, muscle tears/ pulls
ankle sprain, shoulder separation, knee soft tissue trauma
Rotator cuff tear
due to throwing injury . Very swollen and inflamed
With a rotator cuff injury which muscles are involved?
Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus and teres minor
Rotator cuff tendinitis diagnosed?
physical exam and MRI scan and resisted muscle test
SLAP stands for?
Superior labrum anterior and posterior
SLAP tear and healing process
Labrum detached from glenoid causing pain and generally do not heal themselves (surgery needed)
Bankart tear
Inferior glenoid tear, must be re-attached. typically doesn’t heal and requires surgery
Where is IT Band pain felt?
repetitive injury with pain felt on the outside of knee. Mostly felt in activities such as running
Causes of IT band
weak core muscles or abductors,
over pronation, high/low arches, leg discrepancy, or bow legs
Treatments for IT
work on core strength
strength gluteus medius
ultrasound
Possible diagnosis of shin splints
anterior/ posterior tibialis muscle tendinitis
stress fractures of tibia
compartment syndrome
Treatment for shin splints
RICE
intermediate- tib post exercises
late- return running continue strength plus stretch
Patellar tendinitis
Aka jumpers knee. Pain around patellae
Treatment for patellar
acute- price
Inter- isotonic quads, abductors
late- add more dynamic exercises.
Muscle pull and grade
Muscle pull is a tear. Grades 1-3.
Three is ruptured
Common muscles pulled
adductors, hamstrings, quads, hip flexors. all muscles that are 2 joint muscles
some traumatic sport injuries
lateral lig sprain
shoulder separation
soft tissue trauma
Lateral lig ankle sprain and MOI
MOI is inversion of ankle. Graded 1-3 1: minor 2: mod tear 3: rupture swelling, bruising etc
Shoulder separation
MOI fall or trauma to lateral shoulder
Grades of separation
1: AC only
2: AC and conoid/ trap
3: all 3 ruptured
2 tests to determine AC separation
Lachman test
Anterior flexion
MRI clarifies
AC repair
PRICE, isometrics, ROM
exercises
return to sport
Post Surgical program
Acute: 1-2 weeks PRiCE, ROM, isometrics, bike
Intermediate: 2-8 weeks work on gaining full ROM, reduce flexion
Late: 8 weeks gradual return sport, balance exercises
bracing could be required.
