Exam 6 Material (Animal Tissues) Flashcards
(29 cards)
What is being described?:
- A group of closely related/similar cell types that carry out specific functions?
Tissues
Which type of tissue is being described?:
- Tightly fitted together to form a continuous layer or sheet (ex: skin, lining of digestive tract)
Epithelial tissue
Anything that enters or leaves the body has to cross what at some point?
Epithelium
How many different cell types make up epithelial tissue?
3
What are the 3 different cell types that make up epithelial tissue?
- Squamous cells
- Cuboidal cells (has a cube shape)
- Columnar cells (are long and thin)
How do we classify epithelial tissues?
Based on how many layers they have
What does it mean for an epithelial tissue to be “simple”?
They only have one layer of cells
What does it mean for an epithelial tissue to be “stratified”?
It will have multiple layers of cells
What does it mean for an epithelial tissue to be “pseudostratified”?
It means that you really have one layer of cells but the way the cells are laid out will make it appear as though you have multiple layers of cells
What is being described?:
- are made up of epithelial tissue and depending on the type of _____, it will release them onto am epithelial surface
Glands
Which type of gland is being described?:
- are glands that have ducts that exit/empty onto epithelial surfaces (ex: sweat glands)
Exocrine glands
Which type of gland is being described?:
- are ductless and they feed either directly into blood (then into the rest of the body) or tissue fluids (do NOT empty onto epithelial surfaces)
Endocrine glands
Which type of tissue is being described?:
- cushion organs, generally consist of fibers (collagen, elastic, or reticular fibers) (lots of types)
Connective tissues
Which type of connective tissues tends to provide support for various structures?
Loose and dense connective tissues
Which type of connective tissue is being described?:
- Has elastic fibers and it is useful for the expansion of structures (ex: lungs/blood vessels)
Elastic connective tissue
Which type of connective tissue is being described?:
- is formed by reticular fibers and provides support/framework for liver, lymph nodes, spleen (the skeleton that makes up these organs)
Reticular connective tissue
Which type of connective tissue is being described?:
- is important for staring fat
- also important for installation/for supporting structures
- can be pads for internal organs
Adipose connective tissue
Which connective tissue is being described?:
- is flexible and provides support
Cartilage (connective tissue)
Which connective tissue is being described?:
- provides major support in vertebrates
- also provides protection (ex: ribcage protecting internal organs)
Bone (connective tissue)
Which connective tissue is being described?:
- are important for circulatory travel tissues (will move oxygen with red blood cells, and immune/white blood cells through the body)
- lymph also helps to clean up the mess of fluid loss
Blood (connective tissue)
How many types of muscle does muscle tissue have?
3
What are the 3 different types of muscle tissue?
-Skeletal
- Cardiac
- Smooth
Which type of muscle tissue is being described?:
- is attached to the skeleton/connects to bone and cartilage
- when it contracts, it will move body structures
- is a voluntary muscle (the nervous system can start and stop it)
- these muscles are thin, long, and cylindrical with blunt ends
- they have striations (stripe-like patterns)
- they have multiple nuclei
- can contract very rapidly with relatively high fatigue
Skeletal muscle
Which type of muscle tissue is being described?:
- makes up the walls of the heart
- is an involuntary muscle
- are elongated, cylindrical fibers that branch and fuse
- have striations
- have intercalated disks (helps connect them)
- have only one nucleus per cell
- they contract at intermediate rates and their resistance to fatigue is intermediate
Cardiac muscle
