terrestial biomes
found on land
aquatic biomes
found in water
What is a biome?
A large geographical area with similar features of climate, soil, plants, and animals.
What are the two main categories of biomes?
Terrestrial (land-based) and aquatic (water-based) biomes.
Name the terrestrial biomes listed.
Polar lands, Tundra, Boreal forest, Mountain vegetation, Temperate forest, Grasslands, Desert, Tropical forest.
Name the aquatic biomes listed.
Freshwater, Marine, Coral reefs.
What are the characteristics of polar lands?
Very cold and dry, very little animal life, almost no vegetation.
What are the characteristics of the tundra?
Cold, short growing seasons, no trees.
What are the characteristics of the boreal forest?
Cold, wet, filled with coniferous trees.
What are the characteristics of mountain vegetation?
Cold and windy, low lying vegetation.
What are the characteristics of temperate forests?
Mild temperatures and wet weather, lots of trees and animal life.
What are the characteristics of grasslands?
Vegetation is mainly grasses that support many types of animals, can be very dry or very wet, depending on location.
What are the characteristics of deserts?
Dry, almost no plants, often located in the interior of a continent (away from coasts).
What are the characteristics of tropical forests?
Warm, wet, lots of plant and animal life.
What are the characteristics of freshwater biomes?
Low levels of salt, supports plant and some aquatic animal life.
What are the characteristics of marine biomes?
Made up of three zones that get colder and darker as the water gets deeper, most marine life exists closer to the surface.
What are the characteristics of coral reefs?
Found in warmer waters, often close to land, filled with coral and aquatic life that depend on coral (such as fish).
What is an example of biodiversity in tropical forests?
A Colombian rainforest study found 596 bird species, 150 different species of amphibians, and more than 200 species of mammals.
How do plants and animals in biomes interact?
They have adapted over time and interact with each other in unique ways based on climate and temperature conditions.
