(79 cards)
What are the components of the extrahepatic biliary apparatus?
Right and left hepatic ducts, common hepatic duct, gall bladder, cystic duct, bile duct
What is the function of the extrahepatic biliary apparatus?
Receives, stores, concentrates bile
Why is knowledge of the extrahepatic biliary apparatus clinically important?
Frequently affected by diseases like cholecystitis, cholelithiasis, CBD obstruction
Where do the hepatic ducts emerge from?
From right and left liver lobes through porta hepatis
What do the right and left hepatic ducts unite to form?
Common hepatic duct
How long is the common hepatic duct?
About 2.5 cm (1 inch)
Which duct joins the common hepatic duct to form the CBD?
Cystic duct
What is the angle called between the cystic and common hepatic ducts?
Cystohepatic angle
Where does the common hepatic duct lie in the lesser omentum?
In the right free margin, Right of hepatic artery proper, anterior to portal vein
How often are accessory hepatic ducts present?
About 15% of cases
Where can accessory hepatic ducts open?
Common hepatic duct, cystic duct, bile duct, gall bladder
What is the capacity of the gallbladder?
3050 ml
What is the shape of the gallbladder?
Elongated pear-shaped sac
How does the gallbladder discharge bile?
By muscular contraction
Why are radiopaque substances used in cholecystography?
They concentrate in gallbladder to visualize cavity and function
Which hormone causes gallbladder contraction?
Cholecystokinin (CCK)
Where is cholecystokinin produced?
Duodenal cells
What reflex occurs during gallbladder contraction?
Sphincter of Oddi relaxes
Where is the gallbladder located?
In fossa on inferior surface of right liver lobe
What lobe is the gallbladder along?
Right edge of quadrate lobe
What are the gallbladder dimensions?
10 cm long, 3cm wide
What are the parts of the gallbladder?
Fundus, body, neck
Where does the fundus project?
From inferior liver border at tip of right 9th costal cartilage
What is anterior to the fundus?
Anterior abdominal wall
