Eyes-- TEST 1 Flashcards
(28 cards)
What does the cornea do?
It refracts light and must be transparent; contains many nerve endings.
What is the role of the lens?
Provides accommodation for near/far vision; stiffens with age (presbyopia); most comon problem is cataracts
What is the retina’s role in vision?
Converts images to neural impulses sent to the brain via the optic nerve.
Which cranial nerve controls visual acuity and peripheral vision?
CN II (Optic Nerve) CONNECTS THE EYE TO THE BRAIN
Which cranial nerves control eye movement?
CN III, IV, and VI GAZE
What chart is used for distance visual acuity testing?
Snellen chart (20 feet)
What chart is used for near vision testing?
Rosenbaum chart (14 inches)
What does the corneal light reflex test assess?
Symmetry of extraocular muscles
What are direct and consensual pupil responses?
Direct: same eye; Consensual: opposite eye
What does a red reflex indicate in fundoscopy?
Normal light reflection from the retina
How is an ophthalmoscope used for fundoscopic exam?
Follow red reflex to optic disc and macula in a dark room
How do bacterial and viral conjunctivitis differ?
Bacterial: yellow/green discharge; Viral: watery and burning
What are drussen spots associated with?
Macular degeneration
What is the most common pediatric eye cancer?
Retinoblastoma
What vision condition occurs with aging lens proteins?
Cataracts
What is arcus senilis and what should it prompt under age 40?
A white ring around the cornea; check for hyperlipidemia
What visual change is normal in infants?
Red reflex from birth; 20/20 vision by age 6
What is anasocoria?
Difference in pupil that is usually genetic and benign NOTE if this is seen in thoe older than 50 consider temporal arteritis
What to know about the cornea
Tons of nerve endings= painful if injured; most common problem associated is astigmatism; corneal abrasion needs Wood Lamp evaluation
What is scotoma?
A blind spot seen in pregnancy– sign of pre-ecelampsia
Which deficit would a patient experience if the oculomotor nerve is damaged due to a stroke?
Incapability to move upper eyelid
Which structure would be affected if a patient’s inner eye layer sustained damage from an injury?
Retina
Which advice would the nurse provide a patient to handle visual changes during pregnancy?
Switch from contact lenses to glasses
Which finding during an infant’s eye examination would be a sign of a congenital abnormality?
Failure to gaze at mother’s face or other objects
