(10 cards)
What are the 3 factors that affect prejudice?
Personality, situation and culture
What are the 5 personality dimensions as suggested by Eysenck?
Neuroticism, extroversion, conscientiousness, openness to experience, agreeableness
What is an authoritarian personality?
More likely to be hostile towards those of a different race, social class, age or sexuality etc - have rigid beliefs
How is an authoritarian personality developed?
Experiencing overly harsh parenting, having high standards and being loyal
Example of authoritarian person
Hitler - had strict upbringing - had rigid beliefs
Evaluation of personality
+ Cohrs - found Right Wing Authoritarianism positively correlated with prejudiced attitudes and negatively correlated with openness to new experience - valid - prejudice determined from personality
- validity - personality changes overtime - views may change over time
What is a social norm?
An unwritten rule in society which outlines socially acceptable behaviour in that society or culture
What may happen if a social norm is violated?
May be rejected from a group by members - people abide by social norms so they are not rejected - powerful influence on behaviours
Example of social norm
In UK, we are more accepting of diversity where we have Equality Act 2010 which protects a group of people from discrimination - In Afghanistan, girls are forbidden to go to school
Evaluation of situation and culture
Weakness - cultures change over time - e.g in Germany, Nazis once encouraged Germans to be discriminatory towards Jews but now no longer exist
