Symbol
A word or object that has meaning in and of itself, but stands for another word or object.
Allusion
A reference in a literary work to a person, place, or thing in history or another work of literature.
Irony
Occurs when a person, situation, statement or circumstance is not what it would seem.
Verbal irony
Expression used is opposite of thought in speaker’s mind.
Dramatic irony
Utter words the audience understands in a different meaning.
Imagery
Details/descriptions that create a mental image in the reader’s mind. Appeals to the 5 senses.
Third person omniscient
An all knowing narrator sees and knows everything ( including thoughts or feelings ) that happens within the world of the story.
Third person limited
The narration is restricted to relating thoughts, feelings, and knowledge of a certain character.
Direct characterization
The writer makes direct statements about a character’s personality and tells what the character is like.
Indirect characterization
The writer reveals information about a character and his personality through the character’s thoughts, words, and actions, along with how other characters respond to that character, including what they think and say about him.
Simile
Uses words “ like” or “as” or “than” to compare one object or idea.
Metaphor
States a fact or draws a verbal picture by the use of comparison
Personification
Human characteristics are given to an animal or object.
Alliteration
The religion of the same initial consonant letter, sound, or group of sounds in a sentence.
Onomatopoeia
A word used to describe the sound an object makes
