Phonetics
The study of minimal units that make up language
Articulatory phonetics
The study of the production of speech sounds

A method of writing down speech sounds with the intent of capturing how they are pronounced.
Segments
The individual units of the speech stream
Syllable
Unit of speech made up of an onset and a rhyme
Nucleus
The core element of a syllable, carrying stress, length, and pitch.
Monosyllabic
Consisting of only one syllable
Rhyme
In a syllable, the vowel and the consonants that follow it
Diphthongs
A complex vowel, composed of a sequence of two different configurations of vocal organs
Monophthongs
A simple vowel, composed of a single configuration of the vocal organs.
Running speech
The usual form of spoken language, with all the words and phrases run together, without pauses in between them.
Vocal folds
Folds the muscle in the larynx responsible for creating voiced sounds when they vibrate
Glottis
The space between vocal folds
Bilabial
Sound produced by bringing both lips together
Palatal
Sound made by raising the body of the tongue toward the hard part of the roof of the mouth
Larynx
Cartilage and muscle located at the top of the trachea, containing vocal golds and the glottis.
