Final - Black Boxes Flashcards
Antituberculosis Agents
- hepatotoxicity
- jaundice
- increase LFTs
metronidazole
carcinogenic in lab animal
Flouroquinolones
- tendon rupture = report joint pain/weakness)
2. myasthenia gravis
zidovudine
- fatal lactic acidosis
2. hepatomegaly
aminoglycosides
- neurotoxicity (tinnitus, ototoxicity)
- neuromuscular blockade (resp. paralysis)
- nephrotoxic (check BUN/Creatinine)
amphotericin B
Don’t use nonlipid form if you don’t have to
Doxorubicin
- severe myselosuppression
2. cardiotoxicity = give dexrazoxane & monitor ECG changes
Vincristine
- myelosuppression
2. cold packs
Tamoxifen
- additional CA risk
- thromboembolic disease = blood clots
- endometrial cancer
Methotrexate
- NSAIDS
- myelosuppression
- hepatotoxic
- pulm. toxicity = listen to breath sounds
- dermatologic reactions = SJS
- Ulveritis stomatitis & diarrhea
Epoetin alfa
- cardiovascular & thrombolytic events (TIA, MI, Stroke, DVT)
Cyclosporine
- only admin. by PCP with experience with immunosuppressive therapy (ex. specialists only)
Procainamide
- lupus-like syndrome: increased ANAs
2. Blood dyscrasias - monitor CBC, discontinue at first sign
Amniodarone
causes pneumonia-like syndrome in lungs that may be fatal
Beta Blockers
Do NOT abruptly withdrawal
Anticoagulants
- epidural or spinal hematoma
Furosemide
profound diureses = water and electrolyte imbalances
Nitroprusside Sodium
requires dilution prior to infusion and is not suitable for direct injection. Can cause irreversible ischemic injury and death due to significant drops in BP
Tricyclic Antidepressants
Increased risk of suicide in children, teens, and young adults
Atypical Antidepressants
Increased risk of suicide in children, teens, and young adults
Lithium Carbonate
toxicity is closely related to serum concentrations and may occur at doses close to therapeutic levels = monitor serum levels closely and maintain within narrow range
antipsychotic
not for dementia-related psychosis, increase risk of death
Opioids
schedule II with high potential for physical & psychological dependence
Benzodiazepines
resp. depression & arrest
