What are the two major groups of vertebrates?
Aquatic and terrestrial
What are some characteristics of a fish?
Gills, scales, fins, back bone,
What are the groups of fish?
Agnatha, Chondrichthyes, Osteichthyes
What does Agnatha mean and what are some examples?
Agnatha- jawless fish. Example- lampreys and hag fish
What does Chondrichthyes mean and what are some examples?
Chondrichthyes- fish with cartilage. Example- sharks, rays, and skates
What does Osteichthyes mean and what some examples?
Osteichthyes- fish with bone. Example- just about every fish you can think of (i.e- bass, catfish, etc.)
What is the study of fish?
Ichthyology
How do fish breathe?
Fish bread through their gills, the gills take dissolved oxygen in the water as it flows over the surface of the gills
What does ectothermic mean?
“Cold blooded” body heat is influenced or controlled by the outside environment.
What does endothermic mean?
“Warm blooded” body temp is controlled by the inside and the environment doesn’t change
What does amphi mean?
Double or two
What are the groups of amphibians?
Salamanders and newts, frogs and toads, caecilians
Amphibians have a “double life” which means…?
They begin their life in water but live the rest on land
Amphibians are endothermic or ectothermic?
Ectothermic
What is an amphibians life cycle?
Egg mass, tadpole, tadpole with legs, young frog, adult frog
What are the fish parts? (Like labeling a diagram and stuff)
Eye, nostril, mouth, operculum (gills), pelvic fin, pectoral fin, anus, anal fin, caudal fin, lateral line, soft dorsal fin, spiny dorsal fin.
What does tetrapods mean?
A four footed animal
What is the difference between a vertebrate and an invertebrate?
A vertebrate has a back bone and an invertebrate does not
What do fish have that helps them breath in deep deep water?
Swim bladder
