Invertebrates Flashcards
(22 cards)
What does Porifera mean?
Means that something has pores or holes
What group is classified by their stinging cells?
Cnidarians
What are the two cnidarian body plans?
Medusa and polyp
What are the three major groups of worms?
Round, flat, segmented
Worms are the simplest organism with a what?
A “brain”
What is asymmetry and some examples of it?
Asymmetry-no lines of symmetry. Example-sponges, coral.
What is radial symmetry and what are some examples of it?
Radial symmetry-more than one line of symmetry. Example-sea-stars, Cnidarians, sandollar.
What is bilateral symmetry and what are some examples of it?
Bilateral symmetry-only one line of symmetry and divides into two parts. Example-humans, birds, bugs, worms, etc.
What are the invertebrates?
Sponges, Cnidarians, worms, mollusks, Echinoderms, Arthropods
Mollusks include…
Clams, oysters, scallops, and snails
What is a mantle?
A mantle, or fold of the outer skin lining the shell of a mollusk
What is the scrapy, feeding thing mollusks use to crush and eat and things like that called?
The radula
What are the invertebrates that are classified by their spiny skin?
Ecinoderms
What are some examples of Echinoderms?
Sea stars, sea daisies, brittle stars, sea urchins, sand dollars, sea cucumbers
What does “ Arthropoda” mean?
Jointed feet
What are some Arthropods?
Shrimp, lobsters, crabs, craw dads, spiders, scorpions, centipedes, millipedes, etc.
What are the groups of Arthropods?
Crustaceans, centipedes and millipedes, Arachnids
Where in an insect are the guts and reproductive organs located?
In the abdomen
Where are the muscles located on an insect?
The thorax
What are three ways insects communicate with each other?
Visual, sound, and chemical
What is homing?
When an insect can return to a single identical hole after a long trip or time
What are sponges?
Sponges are very very simple. They have no symmetry, tissues or organs, and are mostly hollow.
