Fractures Flashcards
(19 cards)
Fracture
A broken bone
Dislocation
temporary displacement of a bone from its normal position in a joint
Subluxation
A partial or incomplete dislocation
Avascular Necrosis
he death of a segment of bone, usually caused by insufficient blood flow to a region of the skeleton
Spiral
A fracture that follows a helical line along and around the course of a long bone
Comminuted
A fracture in which the bone is broken or splintered into pieces
Impacted
A fracture in which the bone is broken and one end is wedged into the interior of the opposing end.
Avulsion
The pulling away of the bony attachment site of tendons, ligament, joint capsule, or fascia
Compression
A fracture of a vertebra by pressure along the long axis of the vertebral column. Such fractures, which may occur traumatically or as a result of osteoporosis, are marked by loss of bone height.
Greenstick
A fracture in which the bone is partially bent and partially broken, as when a green stick breaks. It occurs in children, esp.
Hairline
A minor fracture in which all the portions of the bone are in perfect alignment
Simple
A fracture without rupture of ligaments and skin
Compound
A fracture in which fragments of bone protrude through the skin
Closed
A fracture of the bone with no skin wound
Complete
A fracture in which the bone is completely broken
Incomplete
A fracture in which the line of fracture does not transverse the bone
Stress
A microfracture that appears without evidence of a single traumatic onset
Pathologic
A fracture of a diseased or weakened bone caused by a force that would not have fractured a healthy bone
Colles
A transverse fracture of the distal radial metaphysis with displacement of the hand posteriorly and outward, causing the characteristic “dinner fork” deformity
