Frame tool and repair Flashcards
(36 cards)
What is the two primary methods for heating up frames?
- Hot Salt
- Hot air
What is the most common heating tool?
- Hot salt (uses hot table salt)
How is the hot air method used?
- It is an air blower that directs heat to a specific area of the frame
What is the benefit when using the hot air method for frames?
- Cleaner than salt
- Allows for more control
Which method of heating frame would be best to use?
- It depends on the frame material. One or both heat sources can be used.
It’s helpful to have available variety of screwdrivers. What is the most common tool for fixing frames?
- A Flat Head screwdriver (use with slotted screws)
- A Phillips head screwdriver (to be used with Phillips style crosshead screws.)
What type of tool is used to tighten and remove optical hex nuts or star nuts?
- Hexagon Wrench
What design of the frame tool helps the grip the tool?
- The tools have a specially designed grooves and spring clamps.
What are some commonly used pliers type?
- Nose Pad Adjusting Pliers
- Long Chain Snipe Nose Pliers
- Nylon Jaw Pliers
- Combination Chain Nose/Nylon Pliers
- Angling Pliers
- Cutting Pliers
- Lens Turning or Axis aligning pliers
- Len Calipers
What is the Nose Pad Adjusting Pliers used for?
- Slotted to securely grip the frame pad arm
- One jaw that is cupped to cradle the nose pad.
What is the Long Chain Snipe Nose Pliers used for?
- Shaping the bracing eyeglass frames
~To protect the finish of the frame, cover any external surface with a protective cloth before gripping.
What is Nylon Jaw pliers used for?
- Used for general shaping or bracing
- The nylon rectangle on the pliers protects the frame from damage
What is the combination chain nose/nylon pliers used for?
- Adjust in tight areas, while the nylon pad prevents scratching of eyeglass frames
What is the angling pliers used for?
- To angle the temples up or down to adjust for pantoscopic or retroscopic tilt.
What is the cutting pliers used for?
To cut the ends of screws and metal temples
What is the lens turning or axis aligning pliers used for?
Used to twist a lens while in the frame
- It is important to protect the lens from scratches caused by a rough surface or debris between the lens and the pad.
What is Lens Calipers are used for?
- Used to measures lens thickness within 1/10th of a millimeter.
(Be sure the tips are protected with a tip to prevent damaging the lens)
How can you correct a loose lens in a plastic frame?
- shrinking the eye-wire size
What is the step when loosing the lens in a plastic frame?
- Remove the lenses
- Heat frame front until pliable
- immediately immerse in cold water
- repeat if needed
- After lens is inserted, immediately chill lens and frame
- If the frame is still to large after the third try, the technique will probably not work.
What is the step when loosing the lens in a Metal frame?
- Begin by tightening the screws
- If this doesn’t help, then the lens is more than likely cut too small to fit firmly so the gaps needs to be filled with double-sided plastic adhesive liner.
What are the step when Rotated the lens?
- Verify with the lensometer
- Make sure the frame is in proper alignment
- Use lens twisting pliers to move lens back into position.
What are the steps for rolled eye-wire when in a plastic frame?
- Change the direction of the lens insertion
What are the steps in replacing the spring hinges?
- Place temple in proper position
- thread safety pin or paperclip through endpiece and temple hole from bottom
- While inserting the screw, slowly remove safety pin.
What are the steps when measuring the circumference of the lens?
- Use C-size tape measure
- Place lens concave side down inside tape measure loop
- Tighten tape
- Read measurement that corresponds with zero point on tape measure.
