A

She was not liked as she was from Austria who were seen as an enemy to the state. She spent a lot of France’s money on luxuries and jewellery.

A

The enlightenment - this was when lots of writers wrote about problems in France they were very influential.

They wrote about :

  1. Kings power did not come from God.
  2. Opposed to absolute power of the King.
  3. The church was too powerful.

A

Why did the estates general meet after 175 years

A

Louis wanted to change the tax system and so he called an estates general. The third estate hopes to gain more political power after this meeting. Up until this point each estate had one bite and so the third estate was always outnumbered by 2:1. The third estate wanted a vote per person.

Explain the tennis court oath

A

In 1789 the third estate was locked out of their meeting place. They believed this was done deliberately by the other estates. Their demands for change in voting weren’t met. They went to a nearby tennis court to meet and took an oath.

What were the two decisions the National Assembly made?

A
  1. Banned the feudal system, ended the power of the nobles
  2. Issues the Declaration of The rights of man and of citizen - this gave ordinary people more rights such as free speech and religion. - reduced kings power.

Feudal system: All the land was owned by the King. One quarter was kept by the King as his personal property, some was given to the church and the rest was leased out under strict controls.

The King who owned all the land, leased some to Barons. The Barons leased to Knights for protection.

The knights let the serfs or Villeins work the land. The serfs had to grow the food for the knights and all work they did was free to the Knights. The Serfs had no rights and had to ask permission to leave the Manor and permission to marry. Serfs were very poor.

A

Liberty- freedom for the people from the rule of the King Equality - equal treatment for all people Fraternity - cooperation between people

Explain the Flight to Varennes

A

The church was brought under the power of the government and King Louis did not approve He fled France to Belgium which as ruled by Marie Antoinette’s brother. They were caught fleeing at Varennes.

Robespierre now thought of King Louis as a traitor because he fled France King Louis was tried for high treason
