Fuels From Crude Oil Flashcards

1
Q

What is Crude Oil?

A

Crude Oil is a compound straight from the ground. It is made up of different compounds called hydrocarbons

These can be separated by fractional distillation to create different types of fuels for example Petrol or Diesel

Q

What is fractional distillation?

A

The process of seperating the different hydrocarbons from crude oil.

This is done by heating crude oil up a tower.

Each hydrocarbon’s chain is of different lengths (and different boiling points) and condenses at different heights because of thjd

Q

As the carbon chain increases what becomes higher and what decreases?

A

As the carbon chain length increases, the boiling point becomes higher. Viscosity also increases

However flammability decreases
