Function of engine controls Flashcards
(26 cards)
What is a fixed pitch propeller?
Blades with fixed blade angles set by the manufacturer.
What suffers in each performance category?
The aircraft suffers at climb and cruise due to the fixed angle of the propeller
How many type of fixed pitch propellers are there?
There are two types of fixed, propellers climb and cruise fixed pitch propeller.
Describe the climb propeller.
Climb propeller has a lower pitch
Less drag
Higher RPM and more horsepower
Increases performance during takeoff and climbs
Decreases efficiency during cruise
Describe the cruise propeller.
High pitch
More drag
Lower RPM
Less horsepower
Decreased performance during takeoff and climbs
Increased air efficiency during cruise
What instrument in the cockpit helps determine the power of a fixed pitch propeller?
The tachometer it gives direct indication of the engine and propeller RPM.
What does the green arc mean on the tachometer.
Maximum continuous operating RPM.
What regulates the rotations per minute of the propeller?
The throttle
How does the throttle regulate the RPM of the propeller?
The throttle controls the fuel airflow mixture to the engine.
How was the tachometer affected by the altitude?
Higher altitude equals higher tachometer reading equals higher power output by the engine.
What must be done at higher altitudes to maintain the same power output as at the lower altitude?
The throttle must be opened more (pushed in) to maintain the same engine power output.
What is the induction system?
Brings air from outside, mixes it with fuel delivers the fuel air mixture to the cylinder where the combustion occurs.
Where does the air for the air fuel mixture enter the airplane from?
From the front of the plane, the air filter where the engine cowling is located. The second location is inside the engine cowling
How many types of induction systems are there?
Two types the carburetor system the fuel injection system
What is the carburetor system?
Mixes the air and the fuel in the carburetor before entering the intake manifold
How many categories are there in a carburetor system?
There are two flow type carburetor and pressure type carburetor. The second one is not found in small aircraft.
How is the flow of air in fuel mixture controlled?
It is regulated by the throttle valve, which is controlled by the throttle lever in the cockpit
When and where are the carburetors normally calibrated?
At sea level during pre-taxi, checklist flow.
What creates a richer mixture?
An increased altitude, air density decreases, while density of fuel stays the same.
What happens to the engine if altitude increases but if fuel density is not modified?
Engine roughness significant loss of power.
What exactly creates engine roughness?
Fouled spark plugs, buildup
How is the correct fuel air mixture maintained?
By leaning the fuel air mixture using the mixture control.
What takes place when the mixture is leaned?
Decreases fuel flow.
What should be done to the fuel air mixture at decent?
Fuel air mixture should be enriched.
