Flashcards in Functional groups Deck (10):
1

Define: functional group

Specific atoms/groups of atoms/bonds that give organic molecules its specific properties. Eg. haloalkanes, etc

2

Define: haloalkane

Alkane chains containing a halogen atom.

3

The halogen atom in haloalkanes forms a branch. How are these branches named?

The branch becomes is bromo/chloro/fluoro/iodo. Put in front of carbon chain, labelled eg. 1-bromobutane

4

Define: alcohol (alkanol)

Alkane chains containing a hydroxyl group (OH)

5

How are alcohols named?

[carbon chain without e]-#-[ol]

6

Define: carboxylic acid

Alkane chains containing a carboxyl group (COOH)

7

Are the carboxyl groups in carboxylic acids always on the end?

Yes

8

How are carboxylic acids named?

[carbon chain without e][oic acid]

9

Define: amine

Alkane cahins containing a NH2 functional group.

10

How are amines named?

[carbon chain without e]-#-[amine]
