Gas exchange - flowering plants Flashcards

1
Q

6 ways leaves are adapted for efficient gas exchange

A

1) They are broad, so there’s a large surface area for diffusion.
2) They are thin, so gases only have to travel a short distance to the cells where they are needed.
3) There are air spaces inside the leaf which lets gases move freely between cells.
4) The lower surface is full of stomata which regulate the entry and exit of gases.
5) Guard cells control how the stomata open and close by changing their shape and volume.
6) Stomata close when it gets dark.
