Genes and DNA Vocab Flashcards
Reproduction in which gametes from two parents unite
Sexual reproduction
Reproduction that doesn’t involve the Union of gametes and in which a single parent produces offspring that are genetically identical to the parent.
Asexual reproduction
A diagram that shows the occurrence of a genetic trait in several generations of a family.
Pedigree
A cell formed by the Union of two gametes or the union of two gametes to form a zygote.
Fertilization
A person who has one recessive allele for a trait and one dominant allele, but does not have the trait.
Carrier
A sex cell produced by a female.
Egg
The male gamete (sex cell)
Sperm
Chromosomes that have the same sequence of genes, that have the same structure, and that pair during meiosis
Homologous chromosomes
A process in cell division during which the number of chromosomes decreases to half the original number by two divisions of the nucleus, which results in the production of sex cells (gametes or spores).
Meiosis
In a eukaryotic cell, one of the structures in the nucleus that are made up of DNA and protein; in a prokaryotic cell, the main ring of DNA.
Chromosomes
Fertilization of an egg by sperm that occurs inside the body of a female.
Internal fertilization
The union gametes outside the bodies of parents as in many fishes and amphibians.
External fertilization
A haploid reproductive cell that unites with another haploid reproductive cell to form a zygote.
Gamete
a fertilized egg.
Zygote
An organism that is genetically identical to another organism.
