genetic diversity and adaption Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is genetic diversity?
The number of different alleles of genes in a population.
What is this also known as?
Gene pool.
What causes genetic diversity?
Mutation and meiosis.
What is adaptation?
A process by which organisms adjust to suit the changing environment in which they live.
Why will there be variation present in a population?
Random mutations which result in new alleles of genes.
What might this new allele do?
Benefit an organism leading to increased reproductive success.
What would a change in environment do for these organisms?
The advantageous allele for a particular phenotype being selected for as they are better adapted.
What will this allow the organism to do?
Survive and reproduce.
What will happen over time for this allele?
The frequency will increase.
What may the adaptations be?
Anatomical, physiological, behavioural.
