genetic fingerprinting Flashcards
(5 cards)
What is genetic fingerprinting?
= method used to produce a specific pattern of DNA bands from a individuals genome
What are VNTR’S?
= variable number tandem repeats
= short repeating sequeneces in DNA in non coding regions
= vary in length number of repeats probability of 2 indivudlas having the same vntr is low
What are the steps of ginetic fingerprinting?
= extraction of DNA of interest, amplification of pcr
= digesting using specific restriction endonucleases ito dna fragments
= seperation of DNA fragments by electrophoresis
= vntrsn are hybridised at specific complementary base sequences with DNA probes
= gel is developed patterns of bands can be visualed by placing the gel on a xray film, as probes emit emmit raditiona
= reveals postio
how does gel electrophoresis works?
= dna fragment move towards positive electrode- DNA is negativley charged
= smaller fragments move further down the gel- larger fragments found near the top
= different sized fragments are seperated into bands
What is genetic fingerprinting used for?
= foreinsic scientist
= medical diaogosis
= ensure animals and plats are not closley related
