A

As the CFTR protein is not functioning the Na channel is permanently open so water is continually removed from the mucus by osmosis.

What is CFTR protein responsible for?

A

CFTR is a carrier protein, it transports chloride ions out of the cells and into the mucus, thus causing water to move into the mucus by osmosis.
