Genetics 2 Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is genotype?
Combination of alleles the individual carries.
What is phenotype?
Observed physical characteristics/ variation in an organism
What is a dominant allele?
An allele that expresses its trait even if only one copy is present. it masks the recessive
What is a recessive allele?
An allele that only expresses its trait when two copies are present.
What is co-dominance?
Both alleles in a heterozygous individual are fully expressed. Phenotype shows both traits without blending.
e.g- AB blood type.
What does homozygous and heterozygous mean?
Homozygous - alleles are the same
Heterozygous - two different alleles
What is Mendels First Law, aka the Law of Segregation.
During gamete formation each member of the allelic pair separates from the other member to form the genetic constitution of the gamete.
How does Mendels first Law relate to what we know about meiosis?
Meiosis produces four HAPLOID gametes.
