Genetics 3 Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is Mendels second law?
Alleles from two unlinked genes assort independently during meiosis
Most X chromosome genes are also present on Y chromosomes. T/F?
False.
In regards to a sex linked disease, what type of offspring can an affected man and an unaffected woman have?
Unaffected sons and carrier daughters.
What are linked genes?
Loci are physically linked as they are close together on the same chromosome
Do linked genes sort independently?
No, their inheritance patterns depend on how often crossing over occurs between them.
What is the correlance between how close loci are to eachother and how often crossing over takes place?
The closer together the loci, the least frequent recombination between them is.
What does a tightly linked gene show?
Low recombination rates (close together)
Loosely linked genes show what?
Higher recombination rates (further apart)
If two loci are close together, recombination between them is less frequent. what does it mean for the alleles inherited?
Alleles will tend to be inherited together.
When does meiotic recombination occur?
During Prophase I of meiosis
What are chiasmata?
Points of genetic material exchange.
