Something that is different from the main pattern
Chloropleth map
A map that shows patterns using shades of colour
Contour line
An orange line on an OS map showing height
above sea level.
Dense
When things or people are tightly packed
together.
What does ‘Describe’ mean?

Using facts to support your point
What are ‘Latitude’ lines?
Horizontal lines that show how far north or south of the Equator a place is. They are the same distance apart all the way along.
What are ‘Longitude’ lines?
Vertical lines that show how far east or west from Prime Meridian a place is.
What does ‘Manipulation’ refer to?
Using mathematical skills to compare data, eg saying something is double the size of something else.
What is a ‘Map symbol’?
An image on a map used to represent something in real life.
What is an ‘OS map’?
A detailed map that shows natural and human characteristics of a place using colour and map symbols and contour lines.
What does ‘Population density’ mean?
The number of people per square kilometre.
What is ‘Relief’ in geography?
The shape of the land and the height above sea level.
What is ‘Scale’ on a map?
A part of a map that lets you work out actual distance between places.
What does ‘Sparse’ mean?
When things or people are not tightly packed together, they are spread out.
What is a ‘Trend’ in mapping?
The main pattern shown on a map or graph.
