What is an Empire?
When a very powerful country takes over other countries and rules them for its own benefit.
What is Oral History?
History that is passed down through words and is not written down.
What is Polytheism?
Believing in more than one god.
What is Conquest?
Taking control of people through military force (using an army).
Who is Mansa?
Ruler/King of Mali.
What is a Revolt?
When people fight back and use violence to try and overthrow a ruler and get back control of their lands.
e.g., Boudicca revolted against the Romans.
What is Culture?
What people eat, how they worship, how they entertain themselves, what they value.
What is Hajj?
The Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca.
What was Julia Tertia’s experience of Roman Britain?
Born in Northern Africa, lived in Rome as a child, and then in York as an adult. Married to a soldier in the Roman army, lived a comfortable life, but preferred the weather in Rome. She was a Christian.
What is evidence of history in West Africa?
- Buildings e.g Mosques in Mali
- Oral History - Spoken history such as that told by Griots
- Objects such as the Benin Bronzes
- Writings from Islamic Scholars.
What is the impact of Romans on our lives in Britain today?
- Latin – the Roman language influenced our own and remains on coins and in laws.
- Calendar – our calendar was developed by Emperor Julius Caesar.
- Religion – Christianity spread to us through the Roman Empire.
- Roads – many still follow Roman roads e.g., A1.
What is Paganism?
An Anglo-Saxon religion that involves worshipping many gods and goddesses. Gods included Woden and Friga.
Who are the Anglo-Saxon?
Tribes of people who arrived in Britain from Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands. The three biggest were Angles, Saxons and Jutes.
What is a Mosque?
An Islamic place of worship.
Who is a Griot?
A West African musician who passes on the history of Mali through song.
