Q

Describe the geographic landscape of the Mosel

A

Hunsruck Hills to the south east and Eifel Mountains south west

Hillside forests protext the vines from cold winds blowing in from the mountains/hills

The river moderates heat and is the source of fog for edelfaule

Saar and Ruwer are tributaries in the south east

Converges with the Rhine at Koblenz

Slate provides heat and drainage, its nutrient deficiencies cause low pH and a lack of sulfur in the grapes

Q

Where is the heart shaped vine training used and why? What a pros/cons?

A

On the steepest slopes attached to a sturdy post as to not require wires on the hillside.
These are normally run with vertical cordon or the two canes (forming a heart) however this requires a thinning of the leaves to reduce the chance of rot. The sparce canopy leaves the grapes exposed to sun, resulting in TDN flavors such as petrol
