What villages are north and south?
Which vineyards of note are north and south?
What’s your favorite color?
Red Volcanic Slate due to high iron content. In an amphitheater that creates stunning tropical fruit concentration and (with age) sweet spices.
It’s in Urzig.
North village: Erden
North vineyard of note: Erdener Pralat and Erdener Treppchen
South village: fuck if I know these maps are fucked…. probably Zeltingen-Rachtig
Further down is wehlen with those sundials, no topsoil, and shit.
Describe the geographic landscape of the Mosel
Hunsruck Hills to the south east and Eifel Mountains south west
Hillside forests protext the vines from cold winds blowing in from the mountains/hills
The river moderates heat and is the source of fog for edelfaule
Saar and Ruwer are tributaries in the south east
Converges with the Rhine at Koblenz
Slate provides heat and drainage, its nutrient deficiencies cause low pH and a lack of sulfur in the grapes
Explain:
Erste Lage
Erste Gewachs

Technically all VDP dry wines can be chaptalized as they are just qualitatswein in the eyes of the law
What is the difference between grosslagen and grosse lage?
Grosslagen are the 1971 law’s collective vineyard sites of dubious quality
Grosse Lage are the top tier single vineyards in the VDP’s classification system.
What is a “Traubenadler”?
“Grape Eagle” or the VDP’s logo
When was the VDP founded?
1910 as a promotion of the sale of unchaptalized wines
What did the term “natur” typically mean?
Not chaptilized, but sometimes meant no sussreserve or sulfur, so the 71 law axed it
When did the VDP’s category of origin framework release and when was it last updated?
2000 and 2012 respectively
How may “trocken” be used by a VDP member?
It may not be used on any wine with a “Pradikat” designation. Only Erste Lage or below may have Trocken, Gross Lage wines will have the GG (Grosses Gewachs) on the bottle if dry (must be of at least Spatlese ripeness when picked)
In which Anbaugebiete does the Erste Lage category not exist?
Mosel
Ahr

What is a “gemeinde”?
German for “Village”
Where is the heart shaped vine training used and why? What a pros/cons?
On the steepest slopes attached to a sturdy post as to not require wires on the hillside.
These are normally run with vertical cordon or the two canes (forming a heart) however this requires a thinning of the leaves to reduce the chance of rot. The sparce canopy leaves the grapes exposed to sun, resulting in TDN flavors such as petrol
What is “TDN”?
An aroma compound (1, 1, 6-trumethyl- 1, 2-dihydronaphthalene)
Which causes petrol aromas in Riesling, especially aged Riesling. Caused by excessive sunlight and heat. Best avoided with canopy management (i.e. more shade) and cooler picking times
Name a prominent vineyard in the Ruwer
Maxim Grunhauser Abtsberg (not a GL of the VDP yet as Maxim Grunhauser only joined in 2016)
There’s also Karthäuserhofberg of the Karthauserhof (means carthusian, is a carthusian monastery) winery in Eitelsbach
