From a Human perspective, how do we define the different historical periods until the arrival/dominance of humans?
Holocene = post ice-age
Homo sapiens
Anthropocene = Humans become one of the most important factors and some signs are the nuclear bomb
Through which lenses can we perceive ethics and thus influence our actions?
1) Utilitarism view (focus on resources, what can be used/explored)
2) Social-Contract (we have to give up freedom to obtain freedom)
3) Reason (we are rational and act as such) > our focus are the decisions we are taking.
Why was Iran particularly difficult to conquer? How have things changed overtime?
Multiple attempts to conquer Iran have failed for its geographical position, surrounded by montains and with the presence of a desert. Today, the presence of airplanes removes this particular ability for this country to defend itself.
Why is the Peace of Westfalia important?
The Peace of Westphalia happens in 1648 and it is important because it allows individuals to live across confessions in one same space.
What elements allow one person to be part of a nation?
Shared concepts are:
1) Common language (through radio and tech)
2) Symbolism (flags and colors)
3) Media
4) Education
5) THEM/US (how do we distinguish ourselves)
Why is nationality a complex concept?
Nationality bases itself on Political borders; however, quite often this also meant segregating members of the same ethical group.
What is a FRACTIONAL DIMENSION?
Fractional dimension consists in measuring an object using one same distance. Eg. How many sticks of 5km do I need to cover all the borders of the UK? The rule with Fractional dimension is that the smaller standard measurement I take the more detailed and precise I can be.
How many members does the UN have and when was it founded?
The UN has 193 countries and it was founded in 1945.
