Introduction: Spaces, Places, Scales, Sciences Flashcards
(12 cards)
What does EMS stand for? What is it composed of?
EMS means Electromagnetic Spectrum. We are reffering to waves that can travel through the vacuum.
What are the components of an EMS wave?
EMS waves have a crest and a trough, they posses a wavelenght (distance between crests) and how many waves go through a specific time is called frequency.
In which ways can we conceptualize space?
1) Constructivist approach (actors that shape and move/act)
2) Relational understanding (proximity/distance, innovation, space and time)
3) Space as a resource (with the goal of developing something)
What is a Metapopulation?
Metapopulation is a system and collection of populations that undergo extiction and immigration.
What are Edge effects?
Edge effects happen when a series of relevant factors overlay at the margins of areas, location etc
What are Areal and what does it mean that they can be closed or disjunct?
Areals are the extention and distribution of X factor. This X element can be closed so homegeneous or connected, or rather disjuct unevenly spread.
Explain how Territory and Region are different things.
Territory implies a polical or social control while region is an area with SPECIFIC CHARACTERISTICS and part of a larger space.
What is a Functional Region?
A functional region is an area surrounded by areas where a COMMON ACTIVITY takes place.
What is Relational Space?
Relational space refers to the strengths, the significance and the common interest that a network has. This is considered more relevant than the geographical distance.
If there is a spatial and temporal scale, what organizational scale means?
Organizational scale is used to take measures in spatial science and it is indicating of the levels of institutions involved in a system.
How are PLACES different from LOCATIONS?
Places are concrete and tangible and possess characteristics that make them unique (via alessandro volta a romano d’ezzelino). Locations have a point or area of refference and are defined with a longitude and a latitude.
What is TRIANGULATION?
Triangulation is a Cartographic method that through the angles and a fixed baseline, is able to indicate your position on a map. It uses Euclides postulates.
