(13 cards)
What are the four globalisation points?
- increased competition between countries due to PISA
- establishment of ICT and Transnational Companies
- Increased diversity in Britain
- sharing of methods in delivering education globally
what is the first globalisation point?
increased competition between countries due to PISA
what policies has increased competition between countries due to PISA created?
raise standards and funding to increase position on international league tables
What is the evaluation for increased competition between countries due to PISA?
New Right – increased competition between countries is due to marketisation not globalisation. (OFSTED/formula funding)
what is the second globalisation point?
establishment of ICT and Transnational Companies (google/apple)
What policies do establishment of ICT and Transnational Companies (google/apple) create?
- These companies play a role in writing the curriculum and creating learning materials (E.g. Pearson – British owned paper company, now has divisions across the world as it is cheaper to mark)
- TNCs boost profit through Cola-isation where education institutions promote/advertise brands
What is an evaluation of establishment of ICT and Transnational Companies (google/apple)?
marking overseas is un-useful; different countries place different merit on different skills.
Brands entering education don’t improve quality just boost profits and give them caring face – Starbucks is known for tax avoidance
What is the third globalisation point?
Increased diversity in Britain
What policies has Increased diversity in Britain created?
Increased migration = policies to adapt to the increasingly diverse multicultural society:
British Values by the Coalition, Black History Month/Culture Days to make sure all students feel included
What is an evaluation of Increased diversity in Britain?
globalisation hasn’t effected the curriculum – it remains ethnocentric, and policies that promote diversity don’t tackle the root causes of why ethnic minorities underachieve
What is the fourth globalisation point?
sharing of methods in delivering education globally
What policies has sharing of methods in delivering education globally created?
methods of teaching used in countries that achieve well have been implemented in the UK
E.g. Master Teachers – Singapore, raising entry requirements following Finland (PGCE – 2:1 instead of 2:2)
What is an evaluation of sharing of methods in delivering education globally?
Cultural Relativism – policies from non-western countries may not be successful in western cultures. UK students don’t accept teachers with accents
