Gluconeogenesis Flashcards
(6 cards)
Glucose homeostasis requires two pathways that take place in the liver. What are they?
Gluconeogenesis and glycogen degradation
What is gluconeogenesis?
The net synthesis of glucose from non-carbohydrate substrates including:
Pyruvate
Lactate
Glycerol
Glucogenic amino acids
What is the common intermediate between glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis?
Glucose-6-phosphate
What does it cost to convert 1 lactate to 1 molecule of glucose?
6 ATP
When is gluconeogenesis activated?
After dietary glucose has been oxidized and glycogen has been used up
What is required for the conversion of pyruvate to PEP?
2 step process: Pyruvate –> oxaloacetate —> PEP
Bicarbonate and biotin (cofactor) are also both required, along with ATP
