Action and side effects

A

Glucose is the principle energy source for body cells,
especially the brain. When given IV it has a rapid
onset and establishes normal blood glucose levels
rapidly

SIDE EFFECTS
• Tissue necrosis if extravasated from vein. Check
patency of IV access at all times

dosages

A
adult: EMT 2 IV
15g (150mL) Glucose 10%
Slow IV push
May be repeated at 100ml
(10g) boluses every 5min
until BGL is > 4mmol/L

paediatric: EMT 2 IV
0.25g/kg (2.5mL/kg) Glucose
10%
Slow IV push
May be repeated 0.1g/kg
(1mL/kg) boluses every 5min
till BGL is >4mmol/L
